Over two decades working in specialist-heavy environments - from recruitment to systems and organisational design - I kept seeing the same pattern.
Technical specialists were promoted into leadership because they were excellent at their craft.
Yet most stepped into leadership with little guidance, unclear expectations, and systems that were never designed for people leadership in the first place.
Over time, one thing became clear. Leadership effectiveness isn't a talent problem. It’s a design problem.
The way organisations define roles, structure decision rights, and support new leaders determines whether people succeed or fail once they step into leadership.
Spark Space was created to solve that.
The goal is simple: help technical specialists become leaders teams trust, faster, using evidence, not assumption.
On a grey Canberra morning, I was out for a morning walk to clear my head. I felt down in the dumps, and my thoughts were weighing heavy.
After a while, the clouds parted and sunlight cut through, making the tarmac path I was walking along twinkle.
My mood shifted and I felt uplifted. Then I had my "aha!" moment.
The sparkles beneath my feet transformed how I was feeling. Such a simple moment but it provided such illumination and clarity.
I came up with the name Spark Space, then set to work creating something that provides a sense of clarity and support for others.
Spark Space exists to surface what is already true. We shine a light on things, to shift perspectives and create a clear path forward.
