I spent twenty years recruiting awesome people for pretty cool tech companies.
Most of the time we got the fit right and everyone walked away a winner: the individual, the hiring manager, the team. When it didn’t work, it was costly, disappointing, and it created friction.
Thing is, it was rarely just “not a fit”. There were other things at play and they weren’t always obvious.
Replacing the person was plugging the hole and hoping the leak would stop. Sometimes it did; often it didn’t, because the leak was never about the person. Which is why I started looking at the leak instead.
People do their best work when they feel safe and empowered. Organisations exist to coordinate effort towards shared objectives.
Both depend on the same thing: being clear on what needs to happen, when, why, and who by.
That comes down to three things: Accountability, Role Clarity and Communication.
Most teams think they’ve got these covered, but try asking a team who owns a decision and you’ll rarely get one answer.
So I built SPARK. It measures what’s happening in a team, not what everyone assumes is happening, then gives leaders a clear path to fix it.
When you're deciding where to invest in your team, I help you read what SPARK Baseline shows and decide what to tackle first.
I work one-to-one with your leaders through SPARK Insight and SPARK Development, so the insight turns into a change people can see.
When the problem is the structure, not the person, I work with you on decision rights, roles and how your team is set up.
I run the sessions and workshops inside a SPARK Development cycle, so your leaders aren't left to work it out alone.
On a grey and cloudy Canberra morning, I was out for a walk to clear my heavy thoughts.
After a while, the clouds parted and sunlight cut through, making the dull asphalt pathway suddenly come alive with sparkles. That's when I had my "aha!" moment.
These sparkles beneath my feet transformed how I was feeling. Such a simple moment but one that provided clarity and certainty.
The name "Spark Space" was conceived, then I set to work creating something that provides the same spark for others.
